The OR Chronicles is not a book about dramatic near-death experiences, courageous surgeons and nurses, or medical miracles; nor is it a commentary on the current U.S. medical system. Rather, The OR Chronicles is just that a chronicle, all true, of the sometimes humorous, sometimes bizarre events witnessed firsthand by author Greg Skibo during his career as a medical materials manager occurrences that the uninitiated or those outside the medical profession may find shocking. In Greg Skibo's "The OR Chronicles" -- the author outlines his seven-year career/personal experiences as a medical materials purchasing specialist giving the reader a glimpse into the inner workings of outpatient surgical centers and hospitals, and how the entire staff relate to each other and their work surroundings. Skibo had direct interaction with medical supply vendors, pharmaceutical and instrument representatives, and nurses and physicians in addition to dealing with in-house corporate bureaucracy. The reader becomes privy to his view of how healthcare and other professionals react to medical center material, drug, and instrument shortages during times of economic cutbacks, with corporations focusing more on profitability rather than quality of patient care and employee job satisfaction. His view of the inner workings of some medical institutions shows a conflict between the proverbial "what you see is what you get" as a patient there to be more of "what you get may likely be less than what you paid for" when shortages and substitution of materials come into play. The author implies that this lack of quality control infects the daily attitude of the MDs, Medical and Administrative personnel there with having a serious lack of satisfaction in both job and interpersonal relationships. If you can discount the author's negative view of women and nurses in general, overlook his OCD tendencies and his lack of personal insight as to why he unsatifactorily moved from job to job throughout his working career, you may find the background information very informative. Skibo's writing is candid and good for a first time attempt at a book. As a Registered Nurse, I have had the opportunity to work in many different positions but never in the OR. When I saw the title and the description of the book my curiosity was sparked. The author writes about his seven year career as a purchasing specialist and what really happens within an OR everyday. He does not describe any surgeries but tells us about all of the different personalities that he had to deal with during his career. In reading the book, I found the author to be a little critical toward nurses especially the Recovery Room nurses(gender unknown) and he mentions them often in one chapter when an incident occurred in the kitchen area. I found the information about the inner workings of the OR interesting and the glossary of terms and phrases was very funny. The author did a good job on his debut book and I never realized everything that occurs behind the scenes in the OR.(Reviewed by Eileen, Melissa's Mom)
