Although I didn't grow up in the 30's-40's, much of this sounded so familiar as I read it, which was quite comforting. This is truly a slice of life that all readers can appreciate. The author speaks in an authentic voice which makes the story absolutely believable. And honestly, it makes this Starbucks-drinking, technology-immersed gal long for more simple times. I truly hope that this is the first of many stories by Helen Alley-Taylor.Product details

Loved the book! - I think anyone would love it and anyone that lives or has lived in Melvern needs to make it required reading. Growing up there and guessing what character was based on so and so and knowing exactly where the Smith's was/is - made it feel like I had an inside track to the story. And when Jessie was so upset and Eva took her to sit at the rolltop desk in the old wooden office chair - I am thinking - I remember that desk and chair! It's an easy, enjoyable read. If you like history, small towns, country, farm life or a love story - it's all there.
For Kansas history buffs and lovers of real-life romantic fiction, East Toward Home is a quick read that is beautifully written. Helen Alley-Taylor's first published work weaves a true-to-life story of Jessie and Eddy Daily as reminisced by an elder Jessie following Eddy's lost battle with lung cancer. Through a descriptive, humorous, and richly authentic narrative, the reader is emotionally pulled back to early 1930's rural Kansas and into their marriage, friendship, and time-tested commitment to each other as love, hard work, and humor triumphs the harsh but rewarding challenges of early Kansas farm life, the Great Depression, WWII, and small town rural-America.
